Ioannou.

His story

From paralysed
to black belt.

In John's own words, he went from paralysed, to Jiu-Jitsu champion, to black belt. He trained and taught at the Roger Gracie Academy in Mill Hill, then founded Equilibrium.

If he could come back from that, you can start from zero.

Every belt from white to black awarded by 12× World Champion Roger Gracie and the late World Champion Nick Brooks.

One of the most respected lineages in British Jiu-Jitsu, taught in Wood Green.

Best Jiu-jitsu gym I've trained at. A great coach and teammates with a high emphasis on competition. Friendly to all levels.

Calm under pressure

Learns to stay calm with someone bigger on top of them, and how to get back up. That carries into the playground.

Escapes, not punches

How to get out of a grab, a headlock or being pinned down, without throwing a single strike.

Respect, every class

Listens to the coach, waits their turn, and shakes hands with every partner before and after they train.

Tired & happy

An hour of moving, rolling and laughing with kids their age. They come home worn out and off the screen.

Questions

Before you
book.

I'm not fit. Should I get in shape first?

No. Jiu-Jitsu gets you fit. The Beginners Course is built for people starting from zero, and you go at your own pace.

What's the difference between Gi and No-Gi?

In Gi classes you wear the traditional uniform and can grip it. In No-Gi you wear shorts and a rash guard or t-shirt. Both teach the same core skills. For a No-Gi trial, sportswear is fine. For a Gi class you can borrow a Gi for £5 or buy one at the gym.

Is it safe?

BJJ has no punches or kicks. You learn to control and submit, and you tap to stop at any time. Coaches pair new students with experienced, careful partners.

How much is the trial class?

£15 for adults and £12 for kids, paid online when you book. It comes off your first month if you join.

Can I just turn up?

Book first so we know you're coming and can pair you with the right partner. It takes under a minute, and you'll get a reminder before your class.
